Problem with a pointer (LPD3DXEFFECT)

Hi! I,m working in a videogame developed with DirectX 9.0 and I have a problem when I try to delete an LPD3DXEFFECT object. This object has been only create once. void Shader::destroy() { if(effect != NULL) { ULONG nrefs = effect->Release(); assert( nrefs == 0 ); effect = NULL; } delete single; } effect is not a NULL pointer, but when the instruction "ULONG nrefs = effect->Release();" is going to be executed an exception is thrown. Sorry for my poor English and thanks.
