I thought this was easy. It never was and I think my solution is bad. I'm using billboarded textures for screen aligned (i.e. HUD) objects within a 3D space. Any other more elegant way of doing this? I'm using DirectX by the way.

A typical solution is to switch to an orthographic projection for the purpose of rendering UI elements.
