At this point both are widely used. Traditionally and historically 3DSMax takes the cake for widest used, if thats what you want to go on, feel free. Othewise, get good at one and dont worry about which because it truly does not matter.

So, good day from America.

Neither creates 3D games. Maya and 3DS Max are modeling programs that create 3D content for games. That said, I don't use either, but I think slowpid's point is fairly clear: <regurgitation of slowpid's post>It doesn't matter which one you use. They do the same things and it is probably more a thing of personal preference. He said however that 3DS Max is more widely used. </regurgitation of slowpid's post>

Both will work for 3D models. I like mayas interface better then 3DS Max as I think its easer to work with (although a lot of others disagree!)

I would say download both and go through some of the tutorials, see which one you like.

Hi,

I don't know your circumstances but if you have to buy a modelling package like max or maya. You could try an open source (free) alternative known as Blender to see if you enjoy it first and foremost before spending money on the "proper" gear. I believe there are windows, linux and mac versions of Blender so I am sure you could find a version to suit your current set up.

There isn't a simple answer to the questios which is "better".

3DS MAX has a long history, is more widely used so it probably has more plugins and supporting stuff like books, SDKs etc.

Also, it often depends on the engine you are using, because most engines only natively support one or the other program directly via plugins.

Apart from this, you can possibly get as much done with either program. Of course, they have different user interfaces and scripting languages and each has some features the other hasn't. Depends on the artists and tool programmers workflow which one fits better.

As a programmer I don't know which one is "better" ;) for animation, I hope some artist will comment on this.

In short, you'll have to do some research of your own.

There is no one standard, both that Max and Maya are THE standards. Both have pretty extensive tool sets for getting art into games. id Tech plays better with Maya, Unreal plays a little better with Max, and Source actually plays best with Softimage. At work our artists use Max with a bit of Zbrush, but I know crap tons of other studios that use Maya.

If you become proficient in Max or Maya, a studio will hire you. Seriously if you know what you're doing, and a studio has developed a pretty extensive tool set for a different package, then you'll just train on that package once you start. Like I said before, at work we use Max, but we've hired plenty of Maya and Lightwave artists.

I know what at Rhythm & Hues (a special effects and animation company for film) uses an in-house developed 3d software, which means that no matter what you train on you're going to have to retrain once you get there.

Max is no longer more widely used than Maya. If you were to poll all the AAA studios, you'd be surprised to find how few Max studios there are remaining at the top tiers, and many of the larger studios are in the middle of a transition to Maya (such as Blizzard, which is using Max for WoW still, but Maya for its coming MMO). Studio-count wise they may still be equal, because lots of small studios are using Max, but as far as seats go, I would be amazed if Max outsells Maya licenses on the gaming front, at least in Europe and North America.

I've gone over the reasons why people are switching before, I just wanted to point this out to dismiss this notion that keeps getting propogated about Max and games.

For your purposes though, just getting into games, it makes no difference, choose what is comfortable. Having interviewed a few people recently, the topic of software experience has come up when considering candidates and every time it is probably the least influential factor (even our Lead Technical Artist came from Maya, not having used Max for 7 years or something- and there is probably no position more reliant on the software than technical artist, and if it didn't matter there, it doesn't matter anywhere.

Try both, see what you like. Odds are if your English isn't so good, you can find more non-English tutorials for Max.
