texture sizes whats more efficient

Say I have a cube. Is it more efficient for the graphics hardware to have one large texture, say something like 1536x1024 or 6 textures one for each side? What about in software rendering mode. -CProgrammer

Nvidia are recommending that you make tile maps (merge multiple textures into one) in general for texturing.
