Synthesized vehicle engine sound system

Considering the industry standard is to record real sound at different RPMs, I'd be inclined to think there's no easy procedural solution and possibly not even a solution providing realistic sound.

I once tried something with (perlin) noise which sound much like a steam engine... but I've never heard one of that for real so I can just suppose it was similar.
Generalizing the model would have required some work and I didn't had the time to investigate.

Try it, maybe you'll get some inspiration. Just have an angle displaced by some noise...
