I'm looking for a database alternative to MS Access/Jet. It's for desktop applications so the single-file storage idea (like MS Access) is useful and easy to handle. SQL Server/Express requires heavy installs and seems a bit overkill for something that should be easily distributable (preferable by just copy-n-pasting the files to a new computer). MS Access/Jet could be a choice if it weren't for the fact it seems a tad old/obsolete. It's more limited than SQL Server and there's no LINQ support. Any suggestions? I'm mainly developing in C# (3.5).

You could try SQLite, although for LINQ support you'll probably need to install something or the other.

I tried SQLite. I found a C# wrapper which followed the ADO structure which is great. No installation except an easily copyable dll. Magos is pleased. Thank you.

I'll check out the others too. LINQ in SQL Server Compact sounds tempting.
