OpenGL Test for stencil buffer writes

My question is concerned with usage of the stencil buffer. My game relies on recursive use of the stencil buffer and I would like to optimize it so as to not pass some shapes to opengl that I already know would fail the stencil test in any later recursive loops. Bassically what I want is to find out if the contents of all parts of the stencil buffer are below a given number. Or I would like to know if there is a way to determine if the stencil buffer gets modified during a certain section of the drawing code where the buffer is enabled. Thank you.
