Is it possible to declare a function prototype in a header file, write its definition in a .cpp file, inline the function, and have the function usable from any other file, without linker errors? Please no philosophical debates on inline. I'm writing a math library and just running tests on whether its faster to __forceinline or not. If I find something where __forceinline really helps, I still want my code to be clean. Thanks

This (typically?) requires link time code generation, not something that all compilers support. To actually inline that is -- the inline keyword itself can be added without error on any sane compiler, it will just largely ignore you :).
