question about DX nomenclatures

Hi I'm reading some directx books focusing right now on directx vetors heres the thing I dont understand typedef struct _D3DVECTOR { float x; float y; float z; } D3DVECTOR; why the need of having the symbol _D3DVECTOR where having only typedef struct D3DVECTOR will work? (besides it also provides clearer code) sorry about asking such a noob question but I'm really curious about this

That's how struct declarations looked in C. They're compatible with both C and C++.
