Do you recommend academic reading before any game related reading?

It's my experience that "academic books" (although I'm not sure which ones you are considering) may be a little thick on theory and thin on actual applicability.

Mat's book is excellent and would be a good start.

I would tend to agree. The academic books and papers have a wealth of incredible information, but it can be very dry to learn from, so you will benefit from a more accessible starting point.
