Do you recommend academic reading before any game related reading?

Hi, I'm planning on buying the Programming Game AI by Example by Mat Buckland, it has some very good/solid reviews. But I would like to know if you think is better if I read first academic books on this subject... Thanks :)

It's my experience that "academic books" (although I'm not sure which ones you are considering) may be a little thick on theory and thin on actual applicability.

Mat's book is excellent and would be a good start.

I would tend to agree. The academic books and papers have a wealth of incredible information, but it can be very dry to learn from, so you will benefit from a more accessible starting point.
