Im barely considering scripting for video games so I got a few questions. 1) Do professional programmers usually use their own script engines or use other engines? 2) What would be needed to learn scripting? 3) Is it really complicated?

1) Both, some make their own, others use existing tools and languages.

2) A scripting language + dedication + the ability to learn.

3) It's as easy or as hard as you make it.

If you're learning a scripting language as a step-up into 'real' programming then you could learn Python or Lua, both can be used to make stand alone applications and also as embedded scripting languages in larger applications and games.

Alternatively, if you want to mod a particular game, then you'll need to get to grips with whatever scripting language they use.

Your post title says "Beginning Programming". So as dmatter queried, are you trying to learn scripting to get a foot into programming?
