Child windows and Direct3D 10

Hi all. I am attempting to write a small editing tool which will consist of a single large window with three smaller child windows (imagine the user interface for your average modeling or level-editing program and that is basically what I'm going for). I know how to create the window and child windows. What I am unsure of is how to make Direct3D 10 render to more than one window at a time. The method I have tried is to create a single device and multiple swap chains but it is not working. I give the swap chains the handles of my child windows as their outputwindows, generating an access violation error. How do you go about setting up Direct3D 10 for multiple child windows? Thank you for your help.
