export engine interface through dll

Hey, i have browsed the web for informations on exporting classes/interfaces through a dll but unfortunately i have not found any clear information about this yet. More precisely, i am not sure how this is usually done for graphics engines. I have written a little graphics engine and now i would like to put it into a single dll (later i would like to put the renderer into its own dll too, in order to use different rendering APIs). What i want to know is: What is usually exported through a dll and how can i do this. thanks souls *edit* The engine is written in C++ and uses the STL.
