I am still sort of new to OpenGL and I was wondering if there were some general performance tips that you could give to me to help speed up rendering (links would be fine also).

To start, there is using a VBO to render your objects. But a golden rule of beginning programming I believe is to not worry about optmization code too much unless you have a much lower framerate than you need. There is always using smaller texture sizes also. Better yet, check where in your code it is hurting the framerate the most and fix that.
