Lightning effect

Ok I have explosions and smoke and flashy things and all that in my game...but how does one go about making a lighting effect. Anyone have an article I can read about 2d lightning fx in XNA? or any other api for that matter. screenshot of what im looking for clicky

You could draw quads with a 'lightning' texture end on end travelling in a certain direction with some random changes in direction. It would look something like this (Ignore the horrible art [smile]).

You could just treat it as a particle system where the particles are quads and 'attached' to each other. As you update each frame you decide a direction and add another section then when it finished fade it out.
