SSAO and other screen effects and alpha-blending? Able to coexist?

From what I understand, there are issues with alpha-blending with SSAO (screen-space ambient occlusion) and some other screen effects. So, I'm just curious if this can be fixed, or if it's just "the nature of the animal"? Thanks.

Because screen-space ambient occlusion is calculated based on data that is in the depth buffer, all data that is not in there does not receive screen space ambient occlusion. Usually you do not render objects that need to be alpha blended into the depth buffer ... so they won't receive screen-space ambient occlusion. Transparent objects also do not tend to self-shadow so much ...
