DrawPrimitive Restarting my computer!!!

This is a wierd problem. I have a call to DrawPrimitive that calls more than 18 vertices and the whole program crashes and restarts the computer. I am running Win2k DX8 and this ONLY happens when I use the primitive type D3DPT_TRIANGLELIST if I use D3DPT_TRIANGLESTRIP it works ok no prob. so I would like to know why this may happen I have a nVidia GeForce 2 Ultra detonator drivers. ?????????
