Soft shadow volume

Hi There, Has anyone had any idea how to do soft shadow volumn??, I have seen the one in dx8sdk but im not satisfied with the quality... and it''s quite slow in a way... I really like the one in Motocross madness2 it looks neat. Any cool techniques? I have some techniques in my mind but it may not work well. Shadow volumn is rendered onto another buffer which is not the screen buffer, and then make it soft and then stick it back into the screen buffer... (i think this method is slow but it should work quite well) I appreciate your help cheers
