DarkXL - Hardware Accelerated Dark Forces Extended - ALPHA

Recommended Posts

DarkXL is a modernized and faithful "port" of Dark Forces. Other classic games, such as Doom, have had source released many years ago leading to a plethora of sourceports. These sourceports are designed to run on modern systems and to introduce these classic games to new gamers with better control schemes, higher resolutions, better OS support and more. The source code for Dark Forces was never released and thus no ports or truly faithful remakes have been made. Yet the game was such a classic for many that it would be a shame to let it be forgetten while Doom continues to thrive. Thus DarkXL, a "port" made completely from scratch designed to faithfully reproduce Dark Forces and then extend it, similar to a Doom sourceport, to make it a great experience for old fans and new gamers alike. In addition to the game, an editing suite will be built in to allow powerful yet easy modding so that Dark Forces can thrive once again. The Alpha has just been released, while in early form you can already get an idea of how DarkXL plays and use the older Dark Forces tools to mod it (until the built in tools are finished). You need the original Dark Forces data in order to play, similar to a sourceport. Currently the first 3 levels are supported as well as other features such as Agents/saves, cutscenes, VUEs (in game 3D object animation) and more. A small update:
DarkXL Alpha Build 8a has been released. This fixes some memory issues and other small things. A more comprehensive bug fix release should be out in a couple of days. The download link is the same as before, listed in the first post.

For anyone reading, has anyone looked at this? Is there more information that needs to be provided?
