3d Engine Needed

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a 3d engine to use with my first-person shooter project. I scrapped my own engine after realizing that it would take much too long to develop, and I am looking for a good engine to use. I am looking for something that is basically already done (not an API, an engine), i.e., something that I won''t have to add much of my own code to to make it into a complete game. I need it to be of Quake-level or better technology, run under Windows (preferably) and have it''s own level/model editors or be compatible with some freely available editor(s). And it must be free . Does anyone have any recommmendations? I''ve been browsing the 3d engines list at www.3dengines.de without much success. Thanks, You''''re just jealous because the voices are talking to me!

It seems to me like you are trying to make a mod. Why not use the Half-life SDK ?

It should be able to accomodate almost anything and you can''t touch the graphics engine. But almost everything else.

Ever think of using the quake engine? Its been open-source for over a year, and you can use it free of charge as long as your obey the gpl.

There are plenty of Quake1 engine modifications floating around which add a ton of nice features, such as scripted texture effects (think q3as shaders), coloured lighting, engine speedups, usage of halflife bsp (bsp30) format and quake2 model (md2) formats, 32bit textures, animation and movement interpolation, rotating geometry, etc etc.

Check out some of the following:

Hey Incubus... this sounds perfect for your needs.. http://www.genesis3d.com I reccommend it. It''s also being updated so the new version will be at quake 3 standards, or so we''re told. It''s 100% free and relatively powerful as it is. Has a huge comunity base to give support, and multiple websites and minapps dedicated to it.

Also here is a huge list:

http://cg.cs.tu-berlin.de/~ki/engines.html

I copied that link from the screen of my other computer (im working on 2 here...) So i may have copied it wrong... looks fine though.

Hope this helps,
