OpenGL OpenGL - Weird Texture Problem

I am working on a small 3d type game that basically draws a lot of cubes everywhere on the screen at certain distances. I have noticed that when cubes are farther away they start to fluxuate, for example some of the sides of the cube will disappear. Also the lighting starts to mess up when cubes are far enough away. I have changed the code to use every possible texture mapping option available in OpenGL and have had no success. I am wondering if this is just a flaw in OpenGL itself, or am I forgetting to do something?

Use mipmaps to get rid of the sparking effect.
Lighting will probably not look good if you have big polygons.
