I apologize for my lack of research before asking this, but ...
Is OpenGl good for basic 2D stuff, or does it only do 3D operations?
Does it have bitmap blitting and the like?
The question is not "why a talking monkey," but rather, "why not a talking monkey." -Monkey Island 4
Yes, you *can* do 2D with OpenGL. Its basically simulated 2d, where you essentially ignore the z coordinate plane. It doesn''t have bitmap ''blitting'' per say, but you can just apply a texture onto a 2D quad, and have the same functionality.

OpenGL can do Blt''ing, it is just implemented poorly (as in, not as fast as) rendering quads on most video cards (or their drivers).

You could always use orthographic projection. (I think I spelled it right ;-)
That''s the most common method, and that is probably what ShiningKnight was refering to in his own post.

I''m currently making a *2D* Engine using OpenGL. Of course everything seems to be simulated, but it''s really-really fast because everything is helped by the hardware. And blendng effects are no problem.
If you want to make 2D Engine with OepnGL. Go for it. Its Great. Use Ortho View and some textured quads (but I prefer triangle strip).
