I know nothing about DirectPlay (or anything else in DirectX for that matter only just recently got the hang of Direct3D) but I''m assuming it is meant for internet multi-play. Can it also access files on the net through http or ftp?

No, DirectPlay is meant only for games. It has a "lobby" mode, which lets players connect to a game, and then you go into the other mode ("game" mode or something I guess - I''m not very familiar with it myself) for the actual game.

If you want to do http or ftp, you''ll either have to use Windows Sockets (which I prefer to use in games as well anyway). Though this is a bit complicated for something simple like http. You can get probably get libraries for http and ftp. There''s a placeholder page for a libhttp on sourceforge (http://libhttp.sourceforge.net/) but there''s nothing there yet... Try searching on google or something for it.
