How well supported are 32-bit indices for D3D8?

It would be nice if I could use 32-bit indices for my landscape engine, since there are more than 65536 vertices sharing the same texture and render properties... but I have to break it up so I can use 16-bit indices. Direct3D8 allows 32-bit indices, but obviously they only work with 3D cards that support them. Which ones do? Should I just ignore this feature until it''s more commonly supported? ~CGameProgrammer( );
