GNU Prolog confusion

Recommended Posts

On a whim, I picked up Programming in Prolog, just for the sake of learning a new weird language, to expand my thinking. I read the first few chapters, then downloaded GNU Prolog. Now when I open the interactive interpreter, the prompt is "| ?-", which seems to mean that it wants questions directly. But the examples in the book seem to show entering facts into the prompt, but it doesn't seem to like it when I do that. So I can't do the examples in the book, and I'm stuck. What am I missing?

Type "[user]." to start the editing mode. Press Ctrl-D to leave editing mode, which will compile everything you've written since you started and make it available for querying.
