I have an example from CodeProject call 3d_terrain_visualisation. It has a device creation like this // declare the Device object device = new Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3D.Device(0, Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3D.DeviceType.Hardware, this, CreateFlags.SoftwareVertexProcessing, presentParams); which passes a System.Windows.Forms.Form as a parameter. This makes the image display inside a form. Could I control the display directly and display my stuff without using a form? is the form necessary?

The short answer is: yes, a form is necessary. You need some sort of window to attach the device too. Even the desktop is a window of sorts. What you want to do it sounds like is create a full screen window, at which point, you just set the parameters of the device to run full screen.
