Graphics Device Creation

I am new to programming in DirectX9 and I am programming a function to create my game window and its assets. What kind of checklist should I go through when creating my graphics device? ex(pseudocode): if-> failed(CreateDevice with these settings) then-> fallback on new settings because this option is not supported with this hardware if-> failed(Recreate device with new settings) then-> try other settings because this is still not supported on this machine //etc would there be an article on this subject that might be of use to me? Thanks... jdub

In DirectX 9 you can get information about video modes and formats through various functions related to D3DADAPTER_IDENTIFIER9 and the GetAdapter information functions in the IDirect3D9 interface. Take a look through MSDN and I am sure you could find a few examples of how this is done. I would also suggest taking a look at Wendy Jones book Beginning DirectX 9.
