In a OpenGL+GLUT project I initialize the display mode by: glutInitDisplayMode(GLUT_DOUBLE | GLUT_DEPTH | GLUT_RGBA | GLUT_ALPHA); Removing the GLUT_ALPHA results in me not getting the graphical effect I require. I am now in the process of converting this project to OpenGL ES for an iPhone app. It's nearly there but the graphics appear as if I were running it on the original standard OpenGL+GLUT project without the GLUT_ALPHA added to glutInitDisplayMode(). There is no GLUT support for iPhone OpenGL ES, so what I require is an alternative way to initialize the alpha component of the screen without GLUT (I think this is what adding the GLUT_ALPHA is doing...). Any help very much appreciated!

You should probably have a look at their SDK and see hoe they do it. I know that GL ES uses the egl function calls to setup pixelformat.
