I would like to give the user the option to change the anti aliasing settings in my app (I realize the video card can override this). But I'm wondering the best way to query the card for its various settings. I don't want to get to fancy with it, say if the user picked 4x then I would use the highest quality setting for that level. But looking at the Nvidia site D3DMULTISAMPLE_4_SAMPLES with quality of 2 is 8x and D3DMULTISAMPLE_8_SAMPLES with quality of 0 is 8xQ. Is there any clean way to figure out just the basic settings of off, 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x?

For Nvidia and ATI a quality level of "0" will always be your "basic" multisampling type. Typically higher quality levels will just change how thhe subsamples are resolved, but not the actual amount of subsamples. For example "8x" MSAA on a Nvidia 8800 is actually only 4 subsamples, while "8xQ" is actually 8 sub-samples.
