Face Detection

I was wondering how to go about calculating the current front face on a gl cube, is there a better way then making a direction list. if you rotate the cube up the sequence is front,top,back,bottom left would be front left back right, on some occasions you have to change the rotation access to keep it spinning in the right direction. Basically a 3d cube that you can at will rotate left/right/up and down, need to know which face is the current front and adapt rotation axis... Thanks
