I need a different approach...

I am currently working on a sprite animation program using Win32. I am currently using a COLORREF to create a brush to color the back ground. The screen is invalidated when the background color is changed. In doing this, I am seeing tearing in parts of the program that I would like to eliminate. Instead of changing the background color, I would like to specify a region to update when the window is invalidated. I have been looking at different options using a RECT, but I can't figure out how implement it. Can someone make a suggestion for implementing this or point me to a pertinent article?
