ambient occlusion for a ray tracer

Hi I want to do ambient occlusion for a ray tracer.What I ve learn through is to shoot many shadow rays through a hemisphere.But Ivent found a good algorithm or a source to so ambient occlusion can someone please help me.Thank you in advance.
