Relief equations

Hello, I am working on my own heightmaps editor (so that it complies with my expectations: world is made of several heightmaps and the heights are continuous from one heightmap to its neighbours, and the world is wrapping), things are quite well advanced, but I am now on the code to draw the relief. The problem is I do not know which equations should I use to make things look natural. Let me explain: I have my heightmap that is flat, the mouse cursor is projected on the heightmap and drawing two circles around. The terrain should be lowered or raised in the outer circle, of the same altitude in the inner circle and gradually between the 2 circles. The problem is which equation rules this gradual change to make it visually natural? Thanks Cathy
