[SlimDX] using GDI drawing along with SlimDX

All I want to do right now is use GDI to draw the fps rate in the upper left hand corner of the window. I am going to wait until I learn more about directX sprites and fonts before I use them in my game.
Right now, I am coding up a frame timing system and I want to know the FPS to see if my system works right.

I have read that if you are using GDI to draw along side DirectX GDI does not know which back buffer to write to and can crash your program. Is this true for SlimDX, and if so what do I have to do in order to avoid crashing my game?
