skinned mesh animation exported as matrices

I have skinned mesh animation data exported from max as a series of matrices rather than the usual xyz rotations. Some of the joints are being translated as well as rotated. It doesn't make any sense to me to translate a joint (unless it's the root joint). What should I do with the translate data? Just discard it and hope that it's not needed?
