Designing a new engine

I'd like to start writing an engine of my own, just for fun and to brush up my software architecture skills. I'm currently determining my specs and design. So I have a broad question; does anybody have favorite books, articles or websites that they can recommend for some inspiration on engine design/implementation ideas? I'm not looking for anything specific, I'm a professional developer and this is more like an experiment I can do in my leisure time. So I just want to find out about interesting ideas or different approaches. If you have any ideas yourself, that'd be awesome too. We can discuss here.
