Back Buffer Format and Full Screen Apps

I have read that you get to pick the back buffer format for full screen applications. Is this true? I have also heard that you cannot use the Desktop's current format. Why not? Thanks, Jdub

(assuming DirectX) You set the backbuffer format as part of the D3DPRESENT_PARAMETERS struct when creating a device - but you should check that the format is supported by the user's hardware before choosing anything exotic. I'd recommend sticking to a conventional and widely supported format. Most of the more unusual formats are used for offscreen rendering of effects that then go into the final conventionally formatted image. The desktop format can also be checked for support. Most intoductory tutorials in DirectX should cover enough about this to validate support and set a conventional format.
