say i have a 2d game with 3 sprites and a background the background uses 3 different textures each sprite has 8 animations. should i store the backgrounds all in the same file. (backgrounds.png) and each sprites animations in the same file. (say player1.png) or can i put them all as completely different images into my program without a loss of speed/memory. (water.png,grass.png, player1walk1.png, player1walk2.png etc) using c#/xna

I'm not familiar with XNA, but in general it's preferable to have a few big textures instead of lots and lots of small ones. In 2d, the common practice is to do things like throw all the animations for a character in one texture and then display only the sub-rectangle according to the frame you need.
