Triangle Projection

Hi, I am trying to implement a routine to determine the closest distance between a line segment and a triangle. I've been told I need to test each edge against the line segment and then test the endpoints against the plane of the triangle when it projects within the triangle. How do I know if a point "projects" within a triangle? (ie: what is 'projection'?, I understand the basic concept visually http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Projection.html, but how do I implement this for projecting a point into a triangle?) Thanks!
