How to write a custom windows shell

Hi, Recently I got bored with standard windows shell (especially after watching some GLX effects on modern Linux), and I started to look for an alternative. The one I found were merely usable, I want something more. After few years of openGL and directX coding, I believe that getting the effects I want can't be that hard. All I need is a starting point - the hooks for input and output that windows shell (explorer, taskbar, clipboard etc) handles, so I can override them with my own application. I'd like to code it in C#, but any reference would be appreciated. Did you ever see any tutorial of "making custom windows shell"? Few minutes of googling gave nothing.
