I am making a Risk type game set in the European theater in WWII. I have spent a few days online looking for good map projections of 1936 Europe, Eastern U.S., North Africa, and the Middle East with not much luck. I think I need the maps on a similar projection so they will fit together into one big game board. The main window in the game will show a fraction of the total map which will be in the lower right corner. I think my game board might move Eastern North America closer to Europe and shift Greenland and Iceland too, to make the map smaller. Here is da plan: When I find the right maps, I'll trace the provincial borders and the rivers and mark major cities in Illustrator, then shift north america and greenland and iceland into position to create the game board. I have used illustrator, but that's my total experience with this type of thing. Anybody got any tips about making game boards from maps? Can I really do this big of an area on a 2d board? concern: should i use a three-d projection and put countries where they truly are? Any good online map archive tips? Thanks!

I guess that your internal data structure will be a network of nodes where each node has a connection with other nodes. Each node will store information like who is currently the node owner and how many troops you have and maybe which resources that node provide.

The second step is to turn that into a game board. If you want to simplify things you may consider using planets (just spheres or circles) and create your basic layout with lines connecting the planets. Using that basic laour you could flesh out your game mechanics and when everything is working fine including game titles, main menu, game interface, etc, you may just switch your board to your final version and that would be all.

Luck!
