recommended game development books

I am looking at some books that are recommended for game development. Couple of criteria that I am looking for. 1. The book should not tie you down to a particular language/library. In essence I am looking for a more concept based book than a coders digest. 2. The book should not be too dated. I am not looking for the latest greatest but anything that covers 2D/3D gaming with relevant information regarding today's standards would be ideal. I do however appreciate classical algorithms used for game development so I am not too adherent to this if the book is very good. 3. Not too complicated. Although I have a background in coding, in the same token I am a newbie to game development so something easy to swallow but at the same time not the ABCs of programming. Any help is appreciated :D

To satisfy requirement 1 (in particular the language part), only Code Complete comes to mind although it is a generic programming book, not a games oriented one.

I'm a bit confused on what you're fully asking for. Are you asking for general game making books? I cannot help you on the coding side because you should be looking game development books based on the programming language you're going to use. However for game design you can try these books:

The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design

http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Guide-Video-Writing-Design/dp/158065066X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228313849&sr=8-2

Programming Game AI by Example

http://www.amazon.com/Programming-Game-Example-Mat-Buckland/dp/1556220782/ref=pd_bbs_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228313849&sr=8-6

If you check Amazon for Game Development, Game Programming or Game Design you will find a lot of books.

I cannot really help you any more then that because you're not looking for code specific books.
