3ds and Rendermonkey

For a university project I am currently programming shaders in rendermonkey. The tutor doesn't care what models we use so I have been downloading free ones of the internet. What I am wondering is how I properly texture these models. Whenever I add a 3ds model, it appears completly untextured.
