uvatlas problem

hello guys, i'm trying to write a simple game. but i'm stuck at generating uv maps for my models. i'm not an artist, creating uv maps by hand is a bit hard for me. so i searched for automatic uv tools, but didn't get much result. they are all seem to be commercial, the only free tool i found has a runtime exception when generating uv maps. but i found a command line tool called uvatlas inside the directx sdk and a set of functions that do this automatic uv map generation. does anybody know the algorithm for this feature? because i need to implement a tool by myself. thank you.
