Hi Currently I have a flat water grid just below my terrain, so I can have an irregular shape terrain and lower parts of my terrain to create rivers and lakes. However, it does not look realistic and one correct way to do it is to render small waves going towards the shores. Please see King's Bounty screen shot: You can see their are small waves pushing towards the shore. Can anyone share/show some tutorials how that thing is done? Many thanks in advance.

There are two main methods I know of.

One is to place some flat geometry along all the shorelines, like a thin strip, with an animated texture. Some form of this is probably the most common. The geometry could be made manually or generated automatically in some manner. One could even place sprites for this purpose.

Another method is to have some sort of depth texture available, and use the depth in the water shader to map in some foam and wave effects in the shallows.

Both methods have tradeoffs, but the second method is easier to implement.

Take a look at this article from GPU Gems 1. In section 1.3 the author describes how they, in their modeling program, creates "shore wave" geometry and modifies the wave behaviour dependent of the water depth.
