I just don''t know what to do for my first game! I thought Tetris would be great cause I read an article some where saying it is good to start with it, but I''ve been thinking about how to make it and it''s too damn complex! I''ve learned directx pretty well by now and have been just been pondering on what I should make for about two years now! I think I should get started but on WHAT? Hope you guys can help! Thanks!

To really understand how to put a game together, if your a beginner, you need a book to show you how, because websites in general will not go into detail about the nitty gritty of putting a game together. I suggest you buy the book "Tricks of the windows game programming guru", which will show you how to put everything together, or if you want a cheaper buy get a. lamothe''s older book windows game programming for dummies. Both will explain how to put together a game. good luck

First game I ever did was a little overhead shooter. Little ship on the bottom of the screen, and bad guys coming at you. You blast them and get points, or they blast you and you loose.

Good first games are, in no real order:
Pac-Man
Space Invaders
Frogger
Missile Command
Qix

All pretty easy. My apologies to the copyright holders.

Well Now,

Theres a game missing of that List and thats Pong. My first game was Pong in Pascal. Then I made some text adventures before moving onto C/C++ then used some OpenGl made some demo''s in that and thats me so far. But Pong really got me started I would recommend it as a first game. Hey it might not teach you quite as much as tetris or need to be as graphical but when your new to it all and don''t have that much knowledge is simpler to start with. Then afterwards try to make games like snake or tetris...

Hi,

You can choose any game you want. I had seen a game in a video game, there were two people seprated by a cactus or something and all one had to do was escape the others bullet and shoot down the other person(2d), very simple to implement. Add scores etc to such a game. It could do well as a first game I think or you could do some space ship or space invader stuffs.

Here is something you may want to check out.

I took my daughter to the store the other day and she ended up getting a little hand held game that played 256 differnt games and it''s only a monochrome display of squares. Now with games like Quake, UT, Myst, etc this probably sounds weak. Unless you have some experience though this may be just the path some people need to take. That little game entertained her and her friends all weekend long. Granted this isn''t goint to teach you things about OpenGL or DX, but it will let you focus on other very important things, like gameplay itself.

When you first start out it''s OK to use your imagination with the computer. It''s also OK to use your imagination while using the computer. It doesn''t have to completely immerse you in this audio/visual extravaganza. Just whip something up and be happy if you manage to come up with something that kills time in a fun way. Did you ever stop to think about how many people play minesweeper and solitare just because?

Just keep it simple at first - you''ll do fine (unlike the length of my post - D''OH!)

pong
breakout or dx-ball
space invaders
top down shooters
etc
besides the top down shooter the rest are pretty simple and can be done even by beginners like me
all u need is some basic knowledge of c or c++ gl/dx and some collision detection
not even that really u can even do it in VB alone but itll suck
butits still gonna be ure first game
and u can only get better from there

Good game to start with if you just want practice and a bit of satasfaction: Yahtzee. I gotr bored one day and set to work.. I am a pretty novice programmer, but I was able to handle it and make it fun. Admitedly, I did it in VB but the concepts are teh same as far as the actual game goes.

One cool perk of this is that people play it. I installed it at the colelge I atend and people play it all the time. Friends at my house want to play to and I have made several copies of the Setup CD.

It''s also got rather broad possibilites for such a simplte idea. High scores, multiplayer, networking etc...

So.. go have fun. I did

Hi,

Deadlinegrunt is right, you need not make tetris as people tell you to make. Solitaire and Minesweeper are simple games which people play and many literally are deep into it when they are playing it.

I think its very important you use your imagination to make your first game. If you want just position a gun somewhere and shoot everything, its up to you. Its important that you have fun while doing it, else you will lose half the interest of making the game. If you don''t want it to have score, don''t have it, its that simple. Just remember to have some fun doing it.

If you want everything to go whacky and crazy, its up to you. There is no rule that you have to do this first or that.

To tell the truth I started with a rattle race clone, only difference was I use only a line and it was a totally hopeless game which I had coded, but the best part was I had fun with it.

My first game was Blackjack, only it was my own version, which made it all the better. I didn''t play casino rules where the dealer has to stop at 17 etc, I had it as though the dealer was acting like the player. This also got me started in AI. AI is a much harder concept to get but extremely rewarding to pull off. My second game was like a text-based street-fighter type game called ''fighter''. You chose one of four people, each of which good at certain types of attacks. Then you chose your attack, and it done success rates etc. Then the enemy went, Im still hooked to it and I made it months ago. I even made an updated version of it, ''FighterEvo'', where I used graphical representations of the players (which i made using microsoft paint ) and health bars. This brought the game more to life, and when I added splash screens it was very polished. Basically fighter was a game id never heard of before (although someone else probably knows something similar), so I made it and t worked. But i suggest making a text-based game first, to get you used to the game loop etc.

Yeah Breakout was my second graphical game, after pong. It was really good because it brings in the concept of level design and map creators. When making something that requiires a map editor I usually make the map editor first, so you know exactly how the information is going to be made. Only then would I start on the actual game.
