I have made my first little application using XNA. So now I would like to send it to some friends. I am talking about on the PC, not the XBOX. So my question is... besides my .exe and the content directory, and a few other files I created for the app... what else do I need to send with the app? Do I need to send any .dll's? and if I do, which ones? and can I send them in the installer, or does the person have to download them on their own. And lastly, any good free programs to create an installable .exe Thank you.

I use NSIS for most simple personal installs. It's maybe not the simplest around, but it's not terribly difficult and has a lot of power and flexibility for free.

As for what to distribute, you should of course include any third-party libraries you reference other than the XNA libraries.

Search for 'XNA Redist' or 'XNA Redistributable' for information on how to package the XNA libraries legally.

You might also want to include the DX9 Web Installer for completeness.

Have you scripted NSIS to run those installers automatically at the end? Something I could never figure out how to do properly.

XNA 3.0 projects can automatically generate a ClickOnce installer for your game. Just right-click on the project and click "Publish".

I still use Inno Setup for the builds I send out to level designers, and the script for that is fairly simple. Just a few steps at the end that check registry keys for XNA 3.0 and .NET 3.5, and then launch the redist's if necessary.
