Books/Activities List?

During my first attempts at game development, I got sidetracked on what to do next. I was wondering, if there is a step by step list? Books to read, activities to do, and the order to do them? I'm attempting isometric 2D engine that will eventually support multi-player.

Last time I checked, there was never a "10 steps to becoming a game developer." or anything of the sort. Here's what I would suggest.

1. Learn a language of your choice.
2. Pick a graphical language to go along with your language.
3. Learn that.
4. Plan out your project on paper.

While you can look for books that seem to teach you exactly each step to become a game developer, I am not sure any exist. Most of them that are kind of like that just tend to teach logic and how games are laid out.

Now, this may not be the answer you were looking for, but it's the only answer I believe anyone can give you. Just write out what kind of things you need to do on paper and do it.
