stencil buffer in ch shader?? supported by now ??

can we employ the stencil buffer from within a fragment shader about this time ?? found references from only a few years back, but nothing recent thanx

best bet is to get a copy in a texture/alpha channel then ?

(asking in relation to shadow volumes, for which id like some shader control in order to get mulitiple light working efficient)
